The Project:For this assignment you will be creating an artwork that evokes a dreamlike/surreal composition by transforming something.
Often when creating surreal compositions you are working with juxtaposition: the fact of two things being seen or placed close together with contrasting effect. A good first place to start is to think of one animate object, and one inanimate object in order to emphasize interest and juxtaposition. Brainstorming:

Photoshop Composition:Before you begin your final project you will become familiar with the basic tools in Photoshop. To do this you will create the start of your composition.
You will create a textured artwork using Photoshop.
Marque Tool (the rectangle or oval selector that you used to make a vignette) Lasso Tool (it looks like a lasso) You can use the regular lasso to make curved or jagged selections by clicking and dragging over what you want to select (you can also switch to the polygonal lasso for selections with more straight lines). Magnetic Lasso (click and hold the lasso tool to find it) Click the edge of what you want to select and create an anchor point to start and then continue clicking along the edges of your object until you make it back to your anchor point and click it again to finish your selection (this tool does not work well in areas of low contrast). Quick Selection Tool (a brush with a dotted semi-circle around it) Click on the bar above on the drop down arrow by the black circle to adjust the size and hardness of your circle selector (the hardness will determine how crisp the edge is). To clean up your edges you can select the Refine Edge button on the bar above and the unselected part of your image will turn white so you can see better. You can then mess with the contrast to make sharper edges, feathering to make the edges partially transparent, or you can shift your edge in or out. Magic Wand Tool (hold the quick select to find it, hint: it looks like a magic wand) On the bar above in the box next to Tolerance, type in a number between 0 to 255 (a small number will select a small range of colors, a large number will select a large range of colors). Click the area on the photo you want to select and Photoshop will select the pixel you click on plus any similarly colored pixels near it. If you want to shift your selection press the shift key on your keyboard and click elsewhere in the image. You can also add to the selected area by clicking the two overlapping squares (right next to the single square button) on the bar above. To subtract from you selection click the button right next to the add selection button. |
